  7. WELCOME TO TURBOLOG!

  9. TurboLog is a fully integrated logging program, morse generator and cluster
  10. access system. It is really two products rolled into one: ClusTerm and Log.
  11. As you progress through the features of TurboLog you'll see how the two
  12. halves of the program work together to give you full station management
  13. information at your fingertips.

  16. THE TURBOLOG OPENING MENU

  18. At this menu you can select which part of the program you want to use. You
  19. can always get back to this menu by pressing ESC one or more times.

  21. F1 accesses the logbook functions. Logging QSO's, producing listings, QSL
  22.    operations, morse code generation etc. are all available via this key.
  23.  
  24. F2 allows you to perform packet functions such as connecting to your local
  25.    cluster node and other services such as your BBS. Note that you can get
  26.    to MOST of the packet functions from the Log side of the program too.

  36. THE LOGBOOK OPERATIONS MENU

  38. This menu presents all the logging related options.
  39.  
  40. F1   LOGBOOK SCREEN. This is where you make your QSO entries. Most other
  41.      services are also available from here. See ENTERING QSO's IN TURBOLOG.
  42.  
  43. F2   LISTS and REPORTS. Produces lists based on logged QSO's, DXCC status
  44.      or user defined keywords. Very comprehensive report generation.
  45.  
  46. F3   MORSE KEYER. All aspects of the CONTROL of the morse keyer.
  47.  
  48. F4   QSL OPERATIONS. Printing QSL labels and editing the label designs.
  49.  
  50. F5   Displays the DXCC worked arrays and summary tables
  51.  
  52. F6   UTILITIES. A wide range of program accessories allowing you to import
  53.      from other programs, sort, rebuild and merge databases, edit various
  54.      system files and alter the date and time.
  55.  
  56. F7   EXTERNAL DATABASES. Access to DOS gateway and up to 9 user defined
  57.      external processes, such as QSL databases, specialist awards programs
  58.      or listing programs.

  66. ENTERING QSO's IN TURBOLOG  (The logbook screen)

  68. This is where you will spend most of your time. QSO's can be entered, edited,
  69. reviewed and deleted. Packet data is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

  71. The following keys are defined from the LOGBOOK screen:

  73. Escape  Back to logbook entry menu
  74.  
  75. Cur-L    Move cursor left in contact field
  76. Cur-R    Move cursor right in contact field
  77. Cur-U    Move cursor left one field
  78. L-Tab    As Cur-U
  79. Cur-D    Move cursor right one field
  80. Tab      As Cur-D
  81. PgUp     Return to callsign field
  82. PgDn     Go to comments field
  83. Space    Move to next field (normally right one field)
  84. Insert   Toggle insert status (Insert mode shows an underscore cursor, 
  85.          overtype mode shows a half height cursor)
  86. Delete   Delete character to left of cursor and, in insert mode close the gap
  87. BackSp   Delete character under the cursor and, in insert mode close the gap
  88. \        Clear the field you are currently in

  153. ~~~~~~~~~~~
  154. Call    Must be either at least 3 characters long, with one number and one
  155.         letter minimum, -or-
  156.         A "call operator" as follows:
  157.         *        This log entry is a comment. Optionally qualified
  158.                  (eg *TVI-TEST) to allow "call" matching later.
  159.         NNNNN.nn A frequency in KHz that the rig will QSY to, in the range
  160.                  0 to 440,000 KHz
  161.         SOUND    Turn the morse generator sidetone on
  162.         NOSOUND  Turn it off
  163.         TUNE     Puts TX on for tune-up. Any key to return to RX
  164.  
  165. RSTs    Must be numeric. The letter A is also accepted to allow for Auroras
  166.  
  167. SER#    Only used in contests, but must be numeric. Leading zeros not needed.
  168.  
  169. LOCATOR Must be a valid 5 character QRA or 4/6 character LOC reference
  170.  
  171. %REVIEW
  172. THE TURBOLOG REVIEW MODE
  173. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  174. The review mode is entered from the logging screen above, by pressing F6.
  175. In this mode you can move around and edit the log database. The following
  176. keys are defined:
  177.  
  178. Esc     Return to logging mode
  179. Home    Go to first QSO entry
  180. End     Go to last QSO entry
  181. Cur-U   Move up one QSO entry
  182. Cur-D   Move down one QSO entry
  183. Pg Up   Move up ten QSO entries
  184. Pg Dn   Move down ten QSO entries
  185.  
  186. F2      Flag QSO to send QSL via Bureau
  187. F3      Flag QSO to send QSL direct
  188. F4      QSL received for this QSO
  189. F5      QSL for this QSO accepted at DXCC desk
  190.  
  191. F6      Edit highlighted QSO entry
  192. F7      Void highlighted QSO entry (will be deleted on next sort operation)
  193.  
  194. %TLLIST
  195. LISTINGS FROM TURBOLOG
  196. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  197. This is menu option F2 from the Logging operations menu.
  198. There are three types of listing available:
  199.  
  200. F1      LOGBOOK LISTINGS
  201.         Listings of logbook entries, selected by country, callsign, locator
  202.         etc., and filtered by date, time or QSO number. Listings can be
  203.         displayed on the screen, printed or logged to a file.
  204.  
  205. F2      DXCC LISTINGS
  206.         DXCC worked listings. Can be filtered in various ways to present views
  207.         on your DXCC activity. Listings can be displayed on the screen,
  208.         printed or logged to a file.
  209.  
  210. F3      USER DEFINED KEYWORD LISTINGS
  211.         If you use the User Defined Keyword field, then you can subsequently
  212.         produce listings (eg: of US States or WAB areas worked) using this
  213.         function.
  214.  
  215. %TLMORSE
  216. MORSE KEYER OPERATIONS
  217. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  218. This is menu item F3 from the Logging operations menu.
  219. Morse Keyer Operations allows you to do the following things:
  220.  
  221. 1.  Edit any morse messages file and/or set it as the file currently in use.
  222.     You can have any number of morse message files, but only one can be in
  223.     use at a time. You can edit an existing file and set it as operational
  224.     without actually saving the file to disc.
  225.  
  226. 2.  Edit any morse profile and/or set it as the profile currently in use.
  227.     The morse profile contains information such as the various preset speeds,
  228.     mark/space and spacing characteristics and sidetone features. You may have
  229.     many different predefined profiles if you wish.
  230.  
  231. %TLQSL
  232. QSL OPERATIONS
  233. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  234. This is menu item F4 from the Logging operations menu.
  235. You can print QSL labels and also edit the actual format of the labels from
  236. this menu item:
  237.  
  238. F1  Print QSL labels.
  239.     You can select Bureau/Direct/All, print order (QSO or callsign), date
  240.     ranges to be printed and one of any number of label formats to be used.
  241.     Label printing can be immediate, or to a print file. In addition, an
  242.     option is provided to print test labels for printer label alignment.
  243.  
  244. F2  Edit QSL labels.
  245.     You may have any number of label formats, and the label editor allows you
  246.     to generate and edit these formats. Various label sizes and web sizes are
  247.     available, and a test print facility is also included.
  248.  
  249. %MATRIX
  250. THE "WORKED MATRIX"    
  251. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  252. This is option F5 from the Logging operations menu, or F4 from the Packet
  253. operations menu. It can also be hot-keyed to from many other windows.
  254.  
  255. This displays a concise matrix of countries worked by CONTINENT and
  256. MODE. Each continent can be selected by a function key, whilst the mode is
  257. selected by pressing the space-bar. Worked data is supplied as a single line
  258. per prefix which is 12 characters in length. Each character position
  259. represents a single band, in the order given by you in TURBOLOG.CNF.
  260.  
  261. A summary display is also available, showing DXCC band/mode counts for
  262. various combinations of bands, and band by band.
  263.

  265. F1           Help!
  266. F2-F7        Select Continent (only used in matrix display)
  267. Space Bar    Select Mode
  268. F8           Switch between summary page and matrix pages.
  269.  
  270. The icons used in the matrix display have the following meaning:
  271. ^030            Worked this band/mode during current period
  272. ^127            Worked during previous periods
  273. ^001            Worked during both previous and current periods
  274.  
  275. %TLUTILS
  276. LOGBOOK UTILITIES
  277. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  278. This menu allows you to perform a number of TurboLog support activities. It is
  279. option F6 from the Logging operations menu.
  280.  
  281. F1      Set the system clock. A menu guides you through this operation
  282. F2      Edit the TurboLog configuration. Changes made are applied
  283.         as soon as the menu is redisplayed. If you edit serial port
  284.         parameters then you must restart TurboLog.
  285. F3      Edit your Personal Directory.
  286. F4      Edit your DXCC worked database. A sub-menu allows you to:
  287.         F1   Edit an individual DXCC country's worked status
  288.         F2   Reset the database to nothing worked (be careful!)
  289.         F3   Set all DXCC countries to worked/QSL'd for each mode
  290.         F5   Terminate current period and start a new one
  291.         F6   Help
  292. F5      Perform TurboLog import, sort and rebuild operations on the log
  293.         database. (see below)
  294. F6      Help. Displays this help page.
  295.  
  296. %TLIMPORT
  297. IMPORT, INDEX AND DXCC REBUILD OPERATIONS
  298. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  299. General WARNING! These operations can all become quite time consuming as they
  300. require one or more complete scans through the log database. The sort
  301. operation is particularly lengthy.
  302.  
  303. F1      Import from other logging programs. You can import from another
  304.         TurboLog file, from G3WGV Contest Log, from K1EA CT and from any other
  305.         ASCII file that contains a basic minimum set of logbook fields.
  306.  
  307. F2      Sorting the database. This operation completely sorts and rebuilds the
  308.         database. It deletes void QSO's, and orders valid QSO's into date/time
  309.         order. This is useful if you have imported a file out of date
  310.         sequence. Finally, the index files are rebuilt. It can take a
  311.         L-O-N-G time!
  312.  
  313. F3      Rebuild DXCC database. It is possible for the DXCC worked database to
  314.         get out of step with your log. This option scans the log and rebuilds
  315.         your DXCC and QSL status database.
  316.  
  317. F4      Rebuild Index Files. If you have made edits to your log, then the
  318.         various indexes (callsign, band, mode, DXCC country etc) may become
  319.         inaccurate. This will affect the results you get in list operations.
  320.         F4 performs a scan and rebuild. It can be quite lengthy, particularly
  321.         if you chose to rebuild ALL the index files.
  322.  
  323. %EXTERNAL
  324. EXTERNAL DATABASES & GATEWAYS    
  325. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  326. This is option F7 from the Logging operations menu, or F6 from the Packet
  327. operations menu.
  328.  
  329. Up to ten external databases/gateways can be defined. Option J is normally a
  330. DOS gateway. If you exit through this gateway, be careful not to run programs
  331. that will conflict with TurboLog, such as other terminal emulators. To return
  332. to TurboLog, type EXIT. All cluster information is buffered so nothing will
  333. be lost (unless you stay in DOS for a very long time and fill up the buffer!)

  346. PACKET OPERATIONS MENU
  347. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  348. The opening menu has several options, each of which are described in more
  349. detail below. To select an option, you can do any of the following:
  350.     Use cursor up/down keys to position to the required option, then Enter
  351.     Press the appropriate function key
  352.     Press just the number of the appropriate function key
  353.  
  354. LINKING, CONNECTION and DISCONNECTION
  355. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  356. You will be disconnected (that is, the TNC is not in communication
  357. with PacketCluster) when you start up TurboLog. Select F1 to get a menu of
  358. Clusters to which you can connect. You can define up to four PacketClusters
  359. in CLUSTERM.CNF, and each may be via NetRom nodes or other indirect access
  360. methods. See the file CLUSTERM.CNF for more information.
  361.  
  362. One of the connect options can be to a "cluster" called DEMO. This is a simple
  363. emulation program which allows you to run TurboLog without being connected to
  364. PacketCluster. You must still have a TNC connected to use the emulator.
  365.  
  366. When you are connected, this menu topic is changed to allow you to disconnect
  367. from your PacketCluster.
  368.  
  369. If TurboLog has been unable to establish a link to your TNC, then this menu
  370. topic is changed to allow you to try the link again.
  371.  
  372. %INTERACT
  373. THE INTERACTIVE DISPLAYS

  375. The Interactive Displays menu allows you to select the various different
  376. windows for PacketCluster and Multi-connect operations, as follows:

  379. THE BASIC PACKET WINDOW
  380. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  381. This provides a multipage display of all activity from the PacketCluster. No
  382. filtering or display structuring of any kind is done on this display.

  384. ESC          Close this window and return to the front end menu
  385. Cursor up    Scroll back (up) a line
  386. Cursor dn    Scroll forward (down) a line
  387. Page up      Scroll back a whole page (up to 10 pages of history available)

  435. %FILTERED
  436. THE FILTERED and UNFILTERED DX WINDOWS
  437. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  438. These windows are identical in their operation. They differ in that the
  439. Filtered window only displays DX spots that passed your filtering rules,
  440. whilst the Unfiltered window displays all DX spots received.
  441.  
  442. If you have set up your countries worked data, then these windows will also
  443. show whether you need a DX spot on any of four modes. You would normally
  444. expect to stay in one or other of these windows during DXing activity.
  445.  
  446. From these windows, you can send DX alerts and construct various reports,
  447. announcements, mail etc. You can also make enquiries of the DXCC database.
  448. You are also informed of the arrival of Talk and Mail messages, WWV reports
  449. and Announce messages, via pop up windows.
  450.  
  451. Cursor up    Scroll back (up) a line in the DX alerts window
  452. Cursor dn    Scroll forward (down) a line in the DX alerts window
  453. F1           Gets you to this help page
  454. F2           Hot key to the logbook window. The call, band and mode of the
  455.              currently highlighted spot are carried accross to the logbook.
  456. F3           Checks through your personal directory for the selected call, or
  457.              any other call you provide in the pop-up window.
  458. F4           Prefix ambiguity resolution. If the prefix is ambiguous, F4 lets
  459.              you select the country. 
  460. Cntl-F4      If the prefix is not ambiguous, but is incorrect for any reason,
  461.              Cntl-F4 allows you to assign another one.
  462. F5           Tell me about... Allows you to enter any call, or even just a
  463.              prefix, together with an optional frequency. The lower window
  464.              will then display full details about this callsign.
  465. F6           Send a DX spot to the cluster. If you used F8 before, then the
  466.              call & frequency are retained, so you do not need to retype.
  467.              If you have a CAT interface to your rig, then the frequency
  468.              will be automatically obtained from you rig as you use F5/F6.
  469. F7           QSY. If you have an interface to your CAT controlled rig, then
  470.              F7 will cause your rig to QSY to the frequency of the
  471.              highlighted DX.
  472. F8           Send a SET/HERE command to the PacketCluster
  473. F9           Send a SET/NOHERE command to the PacketCluster
  474. F10          Hot key to the next window. If you are in the Filtered window,
  475.              then F10 will take you to the Unfiltered one. From Unfiltered,
  476.              you will be taken to the Mail/General window.
  477.  
  478. F            Flip between the Filtered and Unfiltered windows
  479. D            Go to the DXCC summary/display window
  480. ESC          Go back to the interactive display windows menu
  481.  
  482. E            Shows the latest error/warning message received
  483. T            Shows the latest Talk message sent to you.
  484. M            Shows the latest Mail Alert box if you have received new mail.
  485. A            Shows the Announcements box if there have been any.
  486. W            Shows the latest WWV information, if any.
  487. X            Shows the latest WX information, if any.
  488. R            Read the latest mail message.

  490. Alt-T        Send a TALK message. You may send several lines at a time if you
  491.              wish. Only when you are connected!
  492. Alt-M        Send a mail message.

  515. The mail window is used to capture things such as inbound mail messages for
  516. display. It is a scrolling window with a 5 page buffer.

  584. THE CLUSTERM UTILITIES MENU

  586. This menu allows you to perform a number of ClusTerm support activities.

  588. F1           Set the system clock. A menu guides you through this operation
  589. F2           Edit the TurboLog configuration. Changes made are applied as
  590.              soon as the menu is redisplayed. If you edit serial port
  591.              parameters then you must restart TurboLog.
  592. F3           Edit your Personal Directory.
  593. %DXCCUPDATE
  594. F4           Edit your DXCC worked database. A sub-menu allows you to:
  595.              F1   Edit an individual DXCC country's worked status
  596.              F2   Reset the database to nothing worked (be careful!)
  597.              F3   Set all DXCC countries to worked/QSL'd for each mode
  598.              F4   Import an ASCII file into DXCC array
  599.              F5   Terminate current period and start a new one
  600.              F6   Help
  601. F5           Establish links to TNC and/or Transceiver. This is only valid
  602.              if the TNC link is down, or a transciever interface has been
  603.              specified and that interface is down. It is blank otherwise.
